Members of the Carolina Rugby Foundation will have an opportunity to elect five positions to the Foundation board this month.
Admittedly, our election process is running a week behind as the Foundation and Club were consumed with play-offs over the past few weeks.
In every phase, the Carolina Rugby Foundation and the University of South Carolina Men’s Rugby Club have achieved historic milestones over the past 12 months. Working together we have:
Raised more than $80,000 to support the hiring of a new coach. Worked with the University of South Carolina to onboard the Coach as a full-time university employee. Launched our “With You” campaign to cement these gains and permanently secure the coaching position.
Hosted a wildly successful alumni event that attracted more than 150 alumni, players, and parents.
Provided scholarship assistance to eight current players through the Smolka Endowed Scholarship program.
Elevated communication across all platforms. Executed in-person recruiting trips to Charlotte, New Jersey, and New York.
Launched a recruiting newsletter, the Recruiting Rooster, that includes more than 400 high school players, coaches, and parents.
Launched a podcast, the Rucking Rooster, that includes interviews with rugby alumni and current players.
Launched a very successful Rent-a-Rugger program that puts our players to work in the local community to raise funds for our coaching position and team expenses.
Received commitments from 17 high school rugby recruits who will join the team in August. Captured the program’s first conference championship in four years.
Ended a more than five-year draught against Clemson and defeated the Tigers in three consecutive games.
Compiled a 6-3 record while participating in two national championship tournaments.
In the coming year, the board has identified the following priorities:
Ensure the success of the With You campaign by encouraging friends and alumni to make monthly gifts to the South Carolina Rugby Endowment.
Develop a player/alumni mentorship program to connect players with job and internship opportunities.
Continue to devote time, energy and financial resources to our annual fall gathering to unite the Carolina rugby community and inspire philanthropy.
Develop a three-year strategic plan for the Foundation.
“This is an exciting time to join the foundation,” says Robert Balmer, chairman of the Foundation. “There is a lot of energy, and we are seeking board members who are willing to commit their time, treasure and who are committed to advancing our beloved Gamecock rugby program.”
Current board members include:
Chairman: Robert Balmer Vice Chairman: John Hinks, Jr. Acting Secretary: Phillip Harris Treasurer: Micah Stewart Sergeant at Arms: Chris Murphy
John Hinks, Jr. and Micah Stewart will be stepping away from the Foundation. Phillip Harris and Chris Murphy have agreed to stand for re-election. Robert Balmer invites nominations for the chairman position and is willing to take a less prominent role with the Foundation.
Each position and corresponding job responsibilities are posted in the by laws. According to these laws any member of the University of South Carolina rugby community may submit a nomination. Only members of the Carolina Rugby Foundation (those who have made a gift to the Foundation during the past year) may vote on the nominations.
If you would like to become a voting member and have not made a gift, you may do so by visiting this site and make your gift before June 20.
If you would like to nominate a candidate, please send the nominee’s name, positions you are nominating him/her for and the nominee’s contact information by visiting this page by June 20.
All nominees will be notified on June 20 and have five days to reject or accept the nomination. Voting will be held June 25-July 5 with the winners declared July 6.
