Carolina Rugby welcomes all new players regardless of their level of experience, age, or skill. We have dedicated & experienced coaches, as well as many seasoned players, who will help you to learn the game.
The Carolina Rugby program formally trains twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and holds conditioning/weight lifting sessions throughout the week. Home games are played primarily on Saturday afternoons on the Strom Thurmond Wellness & Fitness Center Rugby Field. Carolina Rugby will typically play 2-3 games each Saturday, allowing for all players to receive game time each week.
Due to the diversity of rugby's positions and skill requirements, almost anyone can play rugby at some level. Skills that you may already possess from other sports will help you. Among these skills are:
Basketball - Ball handling, explosiveness, jumping ability, body position / control, and possession tactics
Soccer - Kicking, positioning, field vision, and strategy
Football - Tackling, running with the ball, and leg strength
Track - Speed, agility, and endurance
Wrestling - Leverage, body control, strength, and endurance
Equipment costs are minimal to get started in rugby. You will need a mouth guard and a pair of cleats ("boots"). Soccer cleats are fine, however, football and baseball cleats are not legal in rugby if they have a toe spike. For training sessions, you will want to wear durable athletic clothing, to include official rugby shorts and jerseys, in order to train properly. For official rugby gear and attire, we encourage you to shop online at World Rugby Shop for seasonal offerings.
Spring Practice Times
A car pooling system has been arranged for training sessions taking place at Bluff Rd Field. Team members are expected to be booted and ready to warm-up 15 minutes early. Please show up to practice with all necessary forms filled out and ready, if possible. Incoming players, please contact Team Administrator Mac Stiles.
Athletic Trainers & Concussion Evaluations
All players are required to meet with the Athletic Training staff for a 5min examination before they are allowed to engage in any contact, to include practice. Trainers will be stationed in their Strom Thurmond Wellness Center office during the following times to provide the examinations: Mon - Thurs 3pm to 7pm / Tues & Fri 11am to 1pm
Bluff Road Training Facility
Each week, players are expected to attend weekly coach led skills and conditioning sessions, player led weight lifting and strength training, as well as any matches assigned to them by the Head Coach. Players are also expected to complete a number of logistical items to include the following:
1) USA Rugby Waiver (Paper)
2) USC Rugby Waiver (Online)
3) USC Rugby Participation Agreement (Paper)
4) Student Success Center Waiver (Paper)
5) New Player Profile (Online - New Players Only)
6) USA Rugby Registration ($45)
7) Player Dues ($250 or $350)
8) Garnet Gate Sign-in (Online-New Players Only)
