Despite the awful weather conditions, the Gamecocks emerged 41-10 winners.
The match was played in a torrential downpour, the result of a tropical depression that was hanging around the Carolina coastline.
USC started strongly and built a handy 18-5 halftime lead before eventually going on to outscore Charleston by six tries to two in spite of being heavily penalized. Penalties were 25-9 against South Carolina.
The heavy rain also caused poor handling by both sides that led to a string of unforced errors including numerous knock-ons.
Gamecock try-scorers were eightman Jason Jacobs, Asher Hannah, Max Vernery, wing Chris Stevens, center Brad Kieber, and Collin Kane. Fullback Steve Kornahrens added the rest through one penalty goal and four conversions.
“It was a pretty sloppy game, but we moved the ball in the backs,” South Carolina head coach Geoff Mason told ARN. “The forwards were pretty solid, but we’re still tending to go one out too much.”
The result saw South Carolina
improve to 1-1 in its preseason.
