Mason Cup 7s a smashing success
Event write-up by James Farrar
18 September 2009
Columbia, SC – This past Friday night, USC Men’s Rugby hosted the inaugural Mason Cup 7s Tournament, in dedication to our beloved head coach, Geoff Mason. Expected to be a traditional outing for years to come, the tournament presents the club with a great opportunity to promote player camaraderie, build team chemistry, and to provide an outlet for players to showcase their 7’s ability.

To keep it competitive, each of the six teams were comprised of roughly three A-side players, four B-side players, and four plus C-side players, with each player required to play a minimum of one-half per game. Teams competed in anywhere between three to five matches, depending on their progression throughout the tournament, for a grand total of eleven matches overall. The first match kicked-off shortly after 7:00pm, with the last match concluding at 10:00pm.

Coming in 1st place with a perfect record was Team “Daymen,” led by Freshman Palmetto C-side player, Colin McKeon. Team “Daymen” was able to hold on to an early lead and finish at 14-12 to claim the Winners’ Bracket Championship over second place finishers Team “J-Train.” In the third place match, Team “Pup N’ Suds,” led by Freshman Palmetto C-side player, Rees Grant, was able to win a decisive victory over Team “Average-Joes” with a 24-14 finish.

Each player on the first place team will receive a gift certificate for a free meal at a local Columbia establishment. Congratulations Team “Daymen!”

The Gamecock’s next match will be its annual alumni match against the Carolina Olde Boys on Saturday, September 26th, 2009. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm at USC's Strom Field. The Palmetto C-side will also be home this weekend, hosting The Citadel Military Academy in what is expected to be a hard fought match to the end. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00am at Strom Field.
