located behind USC's Strom Thurmond
Wellness & Fitness Center at 1000
Blossom St., Columbia, SC. After years
of futility against their hated foe, USC
has now beaten the Tigers in three
consecutive meetings, though the sides
haven’t met since the fall 2008 season.

Greenville, NC –
With weather wreaking havoc on the
Carolinas Rugby
League
this year, the #21 USC Gamecocks had
little time to cherish their hard-earned
victory over UNC,
as they made the short drive from Chapel
Hill to Greenville to take on the
always-feisty East Carolina Pirates.
Continuing the strong tradition of USC
pack dominance, the Gamecock forwards
were once again the difference in
controlling the match for South
Carolina. Though ECU has the largest
pitch in the league with 22m try-zones,
a strong, swirling wind limited their
ability to strategically kick around the
field...

Savannah,
GA –
In their final Palmetto League match of
the season, USC ‘C’ lost a thriller in
Savannah, GA. Taking on upstart
Armstrong Atlantic State University, the
Gamecock third-side once again fought
valiantly against A-side competition
before ultimately falling, 32-29.
After weeks of struggling to find their
offensive game, the Gamecock Palmetto
team unloaded a bevy of tries in this
fast-paced heartbreaker. The first try
of the match was by wing Parker Myer,
who was able to pounce upon a loose...

Chapel Hill, NC –
The
#21 University of South Carolina Men’s
Rugby Club traveled to Chapel Hill, NC
this past Saturday to take on the UNC
Tarheels in a critical
Carolinas League
showdown. The outcome of the match was
likely to determine the league’s
Division 1 representative at the USA
Rugby South Final Four, and the
Gamecocks held nothing back in their
quest for the playoffs.
Playing at UNC’s
Ehringhuas
Field,
the Gamecocks used the strength of their
forwards to capitalize on the pitch’s
small dimensions, denying North Carolina
the ball for...

Columbia, SC – With three games
to go in Carolinas League competition,
the USC Gamecocks are still within reach
of the inaugural CRL Championship, and
this weekend's matches against UNC
Chapel Hill and East Carolina will go a
long way in determining Carolina's final
place in the standings.
The North Carolina Tar Heels have been
on fire lately, posting solid victories
over Wake Forest (75-19) and Clemson
(36-27) to give them significant bonuses
in league standings. This has been due
in large part to the remarkable skill

Charleston, SC –
It was a clear and sunny Saturday at
Summerall Field, the rugby pitch on The
Citadel’s campus where the Bulldogs’
A-side faced off with USC’s C-side. The
Division III Palmetto League match-up
was the only action of the weekend for
the Gamecocks, as the club's Division I
sides (A & B) rested for their
doubleheader next weekend against UNC
and East Carolina. USC’s C side showed
repeating signs of an improved offense
throughout the game, but fell plenty
short as The Citadel Bulldogs ran away
with a 37-05 victory.
It was the Bulldogs unmatched efforts in
the scrums and rucks which allowed them
to come away with an early 1st-half
lead. Their first try was scored in the
opening minutes, catching USC’s back
line out of position. Two more tries
were scored by the Bulldogs before the
moment USC’s C-side had been waiting....

Columbia, SC – On a crisp, cold
Tuesday night in Columbia, USC Rugby’s
A-side faced off with Carolinas Rugby
League opponent Appalachian State
University (AHO). As is typical with
this rivalry, the scoring was low and
the intensity was high. In the end, the
Gamecocks prevailed to walk away with a
tough 07-03 victory. With the win, the
Gamecocks improve to 2-0-1 in spring
league competition, and move back into a
tie for first place atop the standings.
The solo try on the day was a
sensational run through the middle of
the ASU defense by center Peter
Boland. Fullback Cullen Clair’s
successful conversion gave USC a 07-00
lead going into the half. Stout defense
by USC kept the Mountaineers from
gaining a single try throughout the
match. Early in the second half, the
Mountaineers were awarded a penalty
kick, which was easily converted by
AHO's kicker. This brought the score to
07-03 in favor of the
Gamecocks. However, this is as close as

Columbia, SC –
USC Men’s Rugby had all three of its
sides in action on Saturday, despite
weather wreaking havoc in both Raleigh
and Columbia.
USC’s Division I A-side came off a two
week break from cancellations to compete
against NC State’s A-side. Coming into
the match, the Wolfpack were tied atop
the CRL standings with the 21st-ranked
Gamecocks. The first half scoring was
started by a penalty kick from fullback
Cullen Clair. Scoring was later capped
off for the half by an unconverted try
by Richard Pyke. The snowstorm that
swept the southeast created poor
conditions throughout the afternoon,
with a mud pit of melted snow placed
where a rugby pitch once stood.
The second half, which began with an
08-00 lead for USC, proved to be the
equalizer in the match. Firing out of
the gate, NC State’s A-side tied the
match at 8 with plenty of time to
spare. The rest of the match, however,
seemed to be in USC’s control as they
moved the ball through tough play from
the forwards. Utilizing multiple
pick-and-drives, USC moved the ball
close...

Columbia, SC – For the second
week in a row, weather conditions forced
cancellations for the USC Men’s Rugby
Club and its Division I A and B sides.
This week, USC was set to take on rival
Appalachian State University (AHO), but
snow in Boone, NC prohibited them from
making the trip down. Nevertheless,
USC’s Palmetto (C) side played their
second match in as many weeks, locking
up with College of Charleston’s A side.
CofC was in the driver seat for most of
the game, as USC’s young C side
struggled to moved the ball
consistently. The first half yielded a
score of 12-00, which was somewhat of a
success for USC given the fact that
strong winds were in CofC's...

Columbia, SC –
The kickoff between USC Rugby’s Palmetto
(C) side and Furman University’s A side
took place this past Sunday, as the
Gamecocks suffered a 27-00 loss against
the Paladins of Furman. The match was
scheduled for Saturday, January 30th,
but predicted rain showers forced the
change. It was a tough matchup for the
USC C, as they battled a Division III
powerhouse in Furman University. With
three national championships to their
name, Furman is great team with success
to prove it. They are coached by John
Roberts, a former USC rugger, who is
very proud of the way USC Rugby has
grown over the years.
The first half was the difference-maker
in the match. After USC played a solid
portion of the half in close contention...

Columbia, SC –
On a cloudy Saturday afternoon in
Columbia, USC Rugby’s A side capped off
their first match of the Carolina Rugby
League’s spring matrix with a 20-17
victory against Wake Forest University.
The match came down to the final minutes
and was full of excitement. The first
half was controlled mostly by USC,
although Wake Forest hung close. The
scoring was started by fullback Cullen
Clair as each team made a penalty kick.
The next two scores came from USC, as
center Peter Boland completed an
unbelievable run through multiple
defenders for the first try of the
spring season. Team Captain and 8-man
Anthony Hughes gave an invaluable effort
throughout the game. Before leaving with
an injured knee, he used his fellow pack
members to rush for a tough try, the
second of the game for USC.
With a 15-3 lead, it seemed as though
USC could put the game out of reach with
another try. In the second half,
however, Wake Forest’s A side battled
back. They did a nice....

USC boasts the largest USA Rugby

tight head and lock when needed.
During his days at Penn State,

The Men's Rugby Club at the University
of South Carolina regularly participates
in various philanthropic activities
throughout the school-year and beyond.
Our commitment to growing the game, as
well as our community, is a testament to
the character and values instilled in
our players and our program.
On campus, the Men's Rugby Club is a
regular partner with the annual
Carolina-Clemson Blood Drive,
wherein we assist the American Red
Cross in its on-campus operation.
This year's blood drive was the most
successful in the 25 year history of the
event. Over 4,542 pints of blood were
collected, far surpassing Clemson's
3,480. Our rugby club participated in
numerous ways, whether donating a total
of 27 pints, or spending time to break
down the blood drive on its final night
of collecting donations...

Greenville, SC – Merciless
defense and teamwork earned Men's Rugby
at the University of South Carolina the
2009 Palmetto Rugby Union Tournament
Championship.
Traveling as 'USC B,' the club had much
to prove this past weekend, as this
year's event fell across USC's Fall
Break - timing that cost the Gamecocks
from playing their top side. Not that it
mattered. With a motley assembly of
players primarily from the club's B and
C sides, USC traveled to the campus of
Furman University in Greenville, SC to
play in the tournament for the first
time since 2007. According to club
president and captain Anthony Hughes,
the team had 5 'A-side' players travel,
but the club's depth and determination

Gentlemen,
This message is to inform all
involved parties that the University
of South Carolina Men’s Rugby team
will
only be traveling with one complete
side for the 2009 Palmetto
Rugby Tournament.
Due to the Palmetto Tournament
falling on the same weekend as our
Fall Break, a majority o f our A/B
players will not be available for
competition, leaving it very
difficult for us to fill one
complete side, let alone the two
that we anticipated. Due to this
shortfall, it has been decided that
the
USC C-side match scheduled for
Friday, October 9th will
not take place, and instead
those players who are available to
travel will now be joining the
remaining A/B players in an effort
to enter one respe ctable side for
the tournament....

Gamecock Rugby announces its
2009 Fall & 2010 competition
slates
In line with its recent move
to the Carolinas Rugby League,
Men's Rugby at the University of
South Carolina has put together
a travel-friendly schedule for
the 2009-2010 school year. For
the first time in many years
(possibly ever), USC will only
leave the Carolinas once this
year - for the 4th annual SEC
Championship Rugby Tournament in
Birmingham, AL. The club will
also have plenty of
opportunities to showcase its
veteran-powered attack, with 9
home matches compared to 3 away
matches and 3 away tournaments.
Playing 60% of its weekends at
home should certainly improve
the players health and wellness,
as they'll need it to get
through a grueling fall set to
prepare them for spring.

USC remains in Division One;
will play a more travel-friendly
schedule
USA Rugby South has recently
reorganized its competition
structure for the 2009-2010
collegiate rugby season. Seven
universities from North and
South Carolina have united to
form the Carolinas Rugby League,
an organization that hopes to
present a unified effort to
promote and grow the game
locally. Three of USA Rugby
South's 2009 Division I programs
have joined four dominant
Division II clubs from North
Carolina, with all 7 clubs
agreeing to a round-robin format
competition each spring
semester. All matches will count
equally in the standings and,
after the conclusion of league
play, the top Division I side
will advance to the newly formed
South Division I Final Four,
while the top two Division II
sides will continue on to the
USA Rugby South Division II
playoffs. At the end of each
season, the CRL will crown its
own overall champion, as well as
name its own All-Star XV.
The newly-formed CRL will
certainly enhance the quality of
life for players in the
Carolinas, all the while
promoting top-flight
competition..... |

Carolina hopes to ride 'B' side
success to 'A' side grandeur in
'09-'10
After a few years of
cellar-dwelling, the University
of Florida emerged in the
2008-2009 rugby season as the
surprise club of the South.
After finishing 6th of 7 in
spring 2008 ('07-08), the Gators
rocketed out of the gate in the
fall. While this came as a shock
to many ("Florida is for real"),
it shouldn't have. Florida's
success didn't coincide with the
luck of the Chinese Zodiac
(there is no 'Year of the
Gator'), but it was due to two
prominent factors: 1.) a strong
core of returning veterans, and
2.) stellar 'B' side play the
previous season... |

Youth, experience apparent in
Rugby South final standings
*In 1st Division play, only the
USC-Clemson match was not held
(due to multiple rain-outs and
scheduling conflicts).*
*In 2nd Division play, the
standings are complex due to
multiple games not played (or at
least not recorded). For
example, Florida has a worse
record than Clemson, but their
'B' sides did not play because
Clemson did not have enough
players after their 'A' match.
While not recorded as a forfeit
(since it is only the 2nd
Division), it does nevertheless
affect the standings as we see
them.* |

Carolina falls to Florida in the
Plate Final, 15-21; 'B' side
ties for 3rd after going 1-1 in
pool play
Birmingham, AL–
South Carolina men's rugby
recovered from a disastrous
opening in bracket play
[25-minute halves] to reach the
SEC Plate Final, where it fell
to the 21st-ranked Florida
Gators, 15-21. The previous day,
Carolina 'A' fell to the Gators
in its opening match, before
rallying to soundly defeat
Georgia and Auburn.
Carolina 'B' defeated the
University of Georgia 37-12
before falling to LSU 27-5,
resulting in a 3rd place tie in
the SEC 2nd Division. The SEC
Tournament discontinued the 2nd
Division Plate after the 2007
tournament, where USC 'B'
defeated Florida. On a high note
for the club, South Carolina
placed a member on the SEC
All-Star Tournament Tam for the
third consecutive year, as
newcomer Calvin Storey impressed
the selectors with his solid
play.
