Our Social Aspect |
At the University of South
Carolina, we realize that rugby
isn't just a team sport - it's a
commitment to a community.
Members of our club are often
brothers more than just on the
field, and are known for
building lasting memories and
experiences for a lifetime.
"In our country, true teams rarely exist...
social barriers and personal ambitions have
reduced athletes to dissolute cliques or
individuals thrown together for mutual profit...
Yet these rugby players. with their muddied,
cracked bodies, are struggling to hold onto a
sense of humanity that we in America have lost
and are unlikely to regain. The game may only be
to move a ball forward on a dirt field, but the
task can be accomplished with an unshackled joy
and its memories will be a permanent delight.
The women and men who play on that rugby field
are more alive than too many of us will ever be.
The foolish emptiness we think we perceive in
their existence is only our own."

Carolina Olde Boys |
|
The
Carolina Olde Boys are the proud
and distinguished alumni of the
Men's Rugby Club at the University of South Carolina. Each fall,
C.O.B. (as the alumni association
is generally referred to)
members trek back to Columbia to
take on USC in the annual alumni
game and recall the shenanigans
of their college years. The
university has among the most
loyal alumni in the nation, and
the rugby legends of yester year
are no different. C.O.B. members
regularly attend USC home
matches, including the club's
annual affair with Clemson, and
are generally very supportive of
the club. Moreover, the alumni
regularly supply the club with
new equipment when needed, and
serve to render assistance when
necessary to fund the team's
playoff runs.
